Due to a chronic gynaecological condition I have to have regular ultrasounds and usually go to Keighley Health Centre where the staff are extremely approachable and friendly whilst maintaining very high standards of professionalism. However recently I received an appointment for an ultrasound at Airedale Hospital and found the whole experience very disappointing. My initial concerns were raised when a fellow patient was asked by a member of staff in front of other patients in the small waiting area 'What have you got?' to which the embarrassed looking lady had to explain why she was there - not a great advert for confidentiality. I was then called in for my scan. The radiographer was functional and I dare say very competent but had no interpersonal skills at all. As a nurse myself, I always introduce myself to my patients but the radiographer failed to do this and made no attempt to put me at ease. I also had to have an internal vaginal scan which is the normal procedure and a chaperone usually comes into the room whilst the internal scan is taking place. Again, the radiographer failed to introduce the chaperone or to explain why she was there. I think it is only polite and respectful for staff to introduce who is in the room and explain why they are there - after all I was laid naked from the waist down in a vulnerable situation but there again I am only the patient! When I tried to discuss my results with the radiographer she was offhand and quite rude - if she had stated that she was unable to discuss the results I would have fully understood but she was very dismissive and didn't seem to care about trying to reassure me. I also found the whispering between the radiographer and the chaperone to be very rude and unprofessional. They made me feel as if I was just a 'body' with no feelings or emotions attached. I think the staff should be more empathetic and think about how they would feel to be laid semi-naked,vulnerable and with two people who have failed to introduce themselves watching over them. I sincerely hope that I show my patients more respect and dignity. Never again will I go to Airedale Hospital for an ultrasound- I will go to Keighley Health Centre where the care is wonderful.
