"no results 9 weeks post procedure"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Colorectal

(as a service user),

I've now had colonoscopy (harassment of waiting list team!!??? Would I still be waiting?), following on from  sigmoidoscopy. The team on the day were ok but at discharge they did not know where or how I would get results and I left  the dept with not even an ink mark on my info leaflet!  I did ask. Now 9 weeks post procedure, nothing. I've phoned 'the office' using  the phone number provided on a previous letter, to be told that the has been a letter diictated and it waited to be checked and sent.

I wonder if this gastric team realise the distress and stress they cause. It's been over 5 months since first investigation with no formal discussion or update from them.  Continued anxiety as I know through letter post sigmoidoscopy that there were high grade cell changes.

I hoped my first poor experience was  a once off but it's not the case.

Stressed. Worried. Disappointed.

Dear “JulyP”

Thank you for your feedback highlighting concerns regarding your colonoscopy. I am extremely sorry for the stress and added anxiety caused by the lack of information.

I would welcome the opportunity to understand and look into what has happened. If you are happy to do so, I would be grateful if you could contact me either by telephone on 01382 496557 or email at wendy.dowdles@nhs.net

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards.

Update posted by JulyP (a service user)

Thankyou. Would like to remain anonymous, so reply here rather than email.

I work within Ninewells and it was hard enough having this procedure in a clinical area where I felt known.

The procedure itself felt 'routine', not good or bad. I was given post procedure advice and the info in booklet was read through and highlighted.

'But, how and when will I get results?' (bearing in mind my earlier post).

Who ever referred you will get them.

'It was the endoscopy nurse who did the sigmoidoscope'

I don't know then.

'How long?'

Check with GP in about 8 weeks.

GP had no communication in this time span but I've since had a letter from a consultant with results and planned follow up.

I think if staff had even said it may take 8 weeks, you'll get a letter...would have been better than nothing. But with some clinical knowledge I know it shouldn't take this length of time for biopsy results and feedback to patients.

Dear "JulyP"

Thank you for making further contact. I can confirm that I have shared your feedback with the Senior Charge Nurses in each of our endoscopy units and will also take the opportunity to discuss at our next Endoscopy Users Group.

Thank you again for bringing this to my attention.

Kind regards
