"Recovery Ambassador Group Feedback “Rescue Rangers”"

About: Sheffield treatment and recovery team / substance misuse

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

We are only two months into our recovery ambassador scheme training. So far, it has been a great opportunity to give back to services that have helped us and gain new skills and knowledge.

We have developed a sense of achievement from attending the training and it continues to motivate us. We know we are important and that people like us are essential to the recovery of others as we have a level of understanding that others might not have. It’s really important that the service continues to safeguard our wellbeing as we remain vulnerable. We support each other with this.

The scheme could be even better if some of us were pushed further in our learning. Also, if the presenters were always ready to start the sessions on time with the technology working, so that time is not wasted. Overall it is a very positive experience to be part of the scheme.

Thanks for your feedback about your experiences on the Ambassadors scheme, I am so glad you are enjoying it. You are absolutely right that you are a very important part of this service. Working with you is one of the most rewarding parts of my job because you are a constant reminder of what can be achieved in recovery, and an inspiration to people who come here for help.

The support and care you show for each other is great, and tells me you will really make a difference when you move on to your volunteer placements. I know recovery can be a rocky road, and I hope you feel that you can talk to me and Andy about any specific worries, and we will try our best to help.

It’s good to hear how keen you are to be challenged more in your learning, and I hope you will follow up and research any topics that particularly interest you, or even look into further education courses that are available. We have tried to pitch the scheme so it doesn’t become too academic and put some people off. I guess we don’t always get it right, so keep telling us how it feels to you!

As I said to the other group – you are great people – you have overcome obstacles and shown resilience in your own lives and now your generosity in giving your time, compassion and life experience to show others that recovery is achievable, that is something to be proud of.

Thanks again for your comments

Jo Radford
