"Poor mental health service"

About: St John's Hospital / General Psychiatry St John's Hospital / Mental health

(as the patient),

I have been in the mental health system for a long time. However I have not been seen by a psychiatrist in over a year. My appointment earlier this year was cancelled due to there being no psychs (not that I’ve ever seen the same one twice! ). Today I attended an open clinic appointment, this is how they do things now. I have to wait between 9 and 12 to be seen by someone. When I am finally called in it’s not a psych I see it’s a nurse. I mean no disrespect to nurses as I am one myself; This puts me in the position of knowing what they can and can’t do, what the limitations are. I was told that I am doing fine that I don’t need to be under psychiatric care, I have a psychiatric condition I absolutely do. I wanted to discuss my meds and make changes which a nurse cannot do unless they are a prescriber. It now looks like I’m going to be discharged from services without even being seen by a doctor.

Dear DissapointedPt

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback with us via Care Opinion. I was sorry to read that your appointment did not go as well as you had hoped. I am aware that there have been some difficulties with the availability of medical staff at St John's and l am aware that the team have been trying to identify ways to support patients.

We would be happy to look into this for you but would need a little more detail from you, if you would like us to do this I would be grateful if you can please contact the Patient Experience Team who would be happy to help, they can be contacted by email (feedback@nhslothian..scot.nhs.uk).

With best wishes
