Unfortunately we had to attend University Hospital Wishaw emergency department with my five year old son yesterday. Being a weekend the department was excessively busy however was triaged much sooner than expected and seen by a nurse and clinical support worker who were extremely nice to my son and understanding that due to his past medical history he is anxious in hospital. Once triaged and given some pain relief we returned to the waiting area where shortly after he was called through to see the doctor. He was seen by two doctors who assessed his condition and got us the medicine he needed with worsening advice what to look out for and to return if any of the above was noted.
The main point of my story is that on an extremely busy and I imagine stressful day for the staff, everyone was very understanding of my son's fears and anxieties and worked well with him in order to assess him fully without upsetting him. On leaving my son said to me 'today was a good day at hospital as no one hurt me and they gave me medicine to help me get better' which to a 5 year old who has had many hospital stays means a lot.
Thank you to everyone working on this evening.
