"I believe the room is not suitable for patients"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

I have been in Room 6 on Acorn ward with my 3 week old baby for the last 3 days and nights. It has been very uncomfortable, too hot, no ventilation and no natural daylight. As a result with a very unwell child it impacted my mental health. Although the Staff are fantastic, the room was not bearable. As the ward is now quieter we have been moved to a larger room with A window. I believe room 6 is not suitable for patients.

Dear RB-34,

We really appreciate that you have taken the time to give us this feedback, especially as you are just going home with your little one, thank you very much for this.

As you say room 6 does not have any natural light into it and the skylight requires changing, this has been requested but firm chasing will now take place. I am hearing from you how stressful it was to be in that room with an unwell little one in an uncomfortable environment.Thank you for telling us of this unacceptable situation, I will ensure that the correct teams are made aware of this so that the work can take place. We will need the correct length of weather to be able to change the skylight in the roof. it would be good to know if you feel the wall colour should be changed to a bright welcoming colour, please let us know. I will also ensure that there is always the opportunity to have a fan to cool down if needed as we know the hospital environment can be very warm.

Thank you so much for this feedback, please have my assurance that we will take this forward.

Suzanne Pilkington

Dear RB-34,

I have good news to share with you regarding Cubicle 6 on Acorn ward.

The skylight has now been replaced and the room is so much brighter, light and airy - and you can now see the sky! The other good news is that the walls are due to be painted in a much lighter colour too. We are planning to add a blind to the skylight too for the summer time so the room can be shaded when necessary.

Thank you so much for your original feedback as this has supported our team to make a really positive change in the environment for all children and families that spend time in this cubicle. You are very welcome to pop in to the Children's Unit anytime to see the changes if you are ever passing by!
