"Excessive wait for hip replacement"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma and Orthopaedics (14- 16)

(as a service user),

Eventually requested my GP to refer me to orthopaedics in May 2019. I was seen at Wishaw hospital in August 2019 .I was advised I was requiring a full hip replacement but that the waiting list could be six months. The doctor advised me that day that they would place me on the waiting list for surgery and that they would invite me to come for a hip injection prior to surgery ,That would avoid me having to join another waiting list .Mid November I was informed by letter that the waiting list target had not be met .I telephoned Patient affairs who contacted me and informed me that the waiting time was 6-9 months meaning that I would wait a total approaching 1 year. I feel that my pain ,the detriment to my health means nothing. My GP felt that they could not pursues as I was not a priority .Why ? I. Had managed to walk into his surgery with a stick !

The galling bit ....I put on my first nurses u inform at age of 18 year and retired from caring in my 68th year .My problem stems from years of lifting and laying .......what can I say ?

Dear Wee Annie

I am sorry you have had to wait as long for your operation. If you contact our patient affairs team on 01698 366 558 I will be able to look into your case specifically. The service faces a number of challenges however we continue to run additional lists to improve capacity and reduce waiting times for patients.

Kind Regards

Stephen

Stephen.Thank you for responding.I cannot adequately express how badly I feel being at the mercy of the system when trying to obtain what is my right.I dedicated almost 50 years to a nursing profession including spells in Lanarkshire.

I gave of my best, am left with the scars and am now a statistic. I fully understand the pressures on services more than most. I am currently being deprived of an active life because the system has failed. At no time have I nor will I fault the clinicians who can only do so much. The rest is down to resources allocated.

I appreciate you would like to assist. Given the effort put in this far I think a meeting is much more appropriate than a telephone discussion.

I would like to hear your response. Regards
