Mum was admitted to hospital because she was not eating properly and medication was not being correctly ingested. She received a number of CAT scans along with MRI scan which revealed no malignancy, infection, blockage or signs of dementia. I would like to register my concern in two areas -
communication
Mum had upwards of 8 nursing staff attending to her before she passed away in October. The communication with the family was inconsistent, incorrect on regular occasions and irregular. One example of this was the family were advised mum had eaten which gave the family great hope, only to receive conflicting communication within an hour stating no food intake had been recorded. Warm handovers seemed irregular with nursing staff fishing about for information usually supplied by the family.
care
Nursing staff were told daily that mum needed encouragement to consume food and medication. However, water/food was found regularly out of reach with no nursing staff in attendance to support and encourage her to eat/drink.
On a positive note, the support staff were caring, compassionate and cheerful trying their best to attend to mum along with the many other elderly patients on the ward.
On the day mum passed the nursing sister was caring and compassionate which the family appreciate.
Regards
