"Seizures"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Liaison Psychiatry Nursing team Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Neurology (Brain, Spinal and Nerves) General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

In July this year I was admitted to hospital after having consecutive ”seizures” that left the left side of my body covered in bruises and with subsequent memory issues.

I continued to have fits on a near weekly basis - with the last one being the end of August where I fell so hard the back of my head was cut.

Neurology advised while in-patient (July) that I be tapered off my medication (one being a benzodiazepine) gradually and that an EEG and referral to an epilepsy clinic be arranged, unfortunately my GP misunderstood and cut my doses off completely. I was sent into A&E twice on the advice of NHS24 with severe medication withdrawal and advised there that the medication would and should be tapered off properly , this did not happen. I spent over a month in severe withdrawal which has now left my body in pain, occasionally severe muscle spasms and a tremor.

I had been referred to Liaison Psychiatry while in-patient to discuss the medications I was on, and to determine if these fits were perhaps psychosomatic in nature. At the psychiatry appointment in September the staff member was dismissive of my concerns about coming off a long term use of benzodiazepine so rapidly, laughed at and attributed my “seizures” as likely anxiety due to a diagnosis of anxiety in my early teens ( I am in my thirties now) but we should wait to see the EEG and clinic results.

It is now November and I had two appointments scheduled with Neurology, the first one being yesterday. I have still yet to undergo an EEG and was of the impression that’s what these neurology appointments were for. The neurologist started the appointment by stating  “I don’t understand why you are scheduled in to see me” and “you look fine” and then proceeded to cancel the subsequent appointment arranged in another clinic.

I was told the muscle tremor and pain would go away if I just stopped thinking about it and that no EEG is yet scheduled. A lot of the appointment was discussing how to obtain my drivers license and as someone who has never driven seemed rather irrelevant.  An EEG will be scheduled but I now have no idea when.

My care (apart from A&E and G-Med who were great, incredibly kind and clear in explaining my symptoms and what needed to happen) has thus far been extremely confusing, patronising, dismissive and in my opinion borderline neglectful. The experience has unfortunately left me feeling extremely frustrated , upset, humiliated and dis-trustful.

I hope to have answers and if needed the proper treatment to resume my normal working life and activities from before these episodes, as of right now that is feeling rather unlikely and my quality of life has and continues to suffer due to this.
