"Made to feel a burden"

About: Weston General Hospital

I attended an appointment at quantock outpatients gastroenterology

where I had an appointment with a Consultant Gastroenterologist

I was due to be at the appointment to discuss my on going stomach problems and a consult about a hydrogen breath test and Sehcat test with a view to the possibility of bile acid malabsorption being a diagnosis

I feel I was totally over looked for these tests with the Dr unwillingly to listen to my problems and concerns and seemed totally unprepared for my appointment and would not enter in to any conversations about previous findings on an endoscopy which found gastritis and hiatus hernia

He seemed totally unwilling to listen to me only asking me repeatedly if I was diabetic to which I replied I had been tested for and didn’t have despite his perseverance on this matter

He then asked about my eating habits and my weight to which I replied I had lost weight and was in the process of doing so and I was aware that would not help my symptoms

I am now 19st 5lbs and 6ft 2 with a big shoulder build and I have actually lost 3 stone in weight in the last 3 or 4 months

he was not very approachable and not very communicative he then told me I was extremely morbidly obese and I should lose a percentage of my body weight and I need to sort my food intake out all of this I found highly distressing and victimising about this being targeted on my weight to which I know i am over weight I accept that fact and I’m already working very hard to rectify to which I told him

I felt the boot had been needlessly put in so to speak

prior to this I explained I had been on very heavy medication for a mental health disorder and had put the weight on that way due to the meds and gained it very quickly upon being medicated

I was almost left to feel like I had been gorging myself on food which is a wrong fact

if he had taken the time to think about the side effects of many heavy mental health medications

as you can appreciate I found this all highly disturbing and distressing and had to deal with this while already dealing with a mental health disorder due to my disorder I don’t deal with these situations well

So I now feel that the tests that I felt would have been more beneficial had all but disappeared from my health management and been overlooked and I won’t ever get the more appropriate tests other than the nuclear imaging test he did recommended which I am happy to attend but feel other tests could have been more appropriate and beneficial due to the cross over of symptoms I am so sorry to complain I don’t normally as I totally value all the NHS do and provide not only for my care but the country as a whole
