"the importance of support from my local GP practice"

About: Barton House Group Practice

(as a parent/guardian),

Seeing the whole me

Seeing the whole me

I wanted to record my thanks to my fanstastic local GP practice and to some individual doctors there for the emotional and practical support they have provided to me  over the years as a parent of two  adopted children.  Since our children came to live with us in 2002, Barton House Medical Centre, and in particular Doctor Bohn  (now retired) and  Doctor Bench, provided our family with the most amazing and essential emotional and practical support.  As well as dealing with all the usual childhood illnesses, the doctors supported us through many difficult times including taking the local authority to tribunal to get the children properly supported in school, multiple referrals to CAMHS and to Great Ormond Street Hospital's Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, letters of support for schools, etc.  The practice doctors and reception staff are always very helpful and accommodating, enabling me to manage many difficult situations with my children and facilitating me making appointments at times that I could manage with the children who were often highly dis-regulated.  In recent years as the children hit the difficult years of adolescence, I have also found the support of Doctor Katiyar invaluable.  He always makes time for me, never rushes me and brings his broad knowledge of childhood trauma and emotional dis-regulation to the table.  He is particularly thoughtful and kind with my children who usually find medical appointments stressful and anxiety inducing, but who really like and trust Doctor Katiyar.  I particularly am grateful to Doctor Katiyar for always asking how I am doing , even when the appointment is for my children and he has been very sensitive and understanding of the pressures and the emotional toll that I have experienced as a parent of two traumatised young adults.  Things are really beginning to improve for our family and I can honestly say that we would not have got to this point without the support of Barton House doctors and staff.  We will always be incredibly grateful and feel so lucky to have had this service for the last 18 years.

Thank you for your generous comments. I am pleased that we have been able to provide continuity of care over many years and have managed to be of support to your family. It is what family medicine should be about and what we strive to provide, if not always succeeding. These relationships are valued by the clinicians and the wider team and it is rewarding to hear that they are equally important to our patients.

Thank you again.
