"Discharged from Neurology and confused?"

About: Golden Jubilee National Hospital University Hospital Monklands / Neurology

(as the patient),

I went to my GP last November with severe lower back pain, although I do suffer from back pain often, this time it was extreme and I could barely walk, I was given pain killers and kept mobile and eventually did recover. In January I went back to my GP with various other symptoms including the lower back pain and strange sensations down my legs, was referred to Neurology and waited until June until I was finally seen, not within the 18-week government target. I was seen by a Neurologist at Monklands hospital and at the time was satisfied by the plan. I was to get an MRI scan of lower back, upper spinal cord and brain.

I went for the MRI scan at the Golden Jubilee in August and received the results which only mentioned that my Upper spinal cord and brain were clear. No mention of lower back and since all was ok I was to be discharged. Not a follow-up discussion to discuss the existing symptoms?

So I had to contact Medinet as this was the company that supplied the consultant. They got back to me a week or so later and told me that a letter was in the post from the consultant.

I received this letter a few days later that stated this was not the plan and that it was discussed at my appointment that the plan was to do the MRI of upper spinal cord and brain as this was where the symptoms led them to.

This was not my opinion of the appointment and I found this confusing as at the appointment one of the main symptoms I presented with is chronic lower back pain and at times this flares and I struggle with walking, the other main symptom I discussed is a numb toe that my GP reckoned could be due to the lower back pain/sciatica but was not sure and hoped the MRI would be able to pick this up. However, as mentioned above my lower back has not been scanned, I have been given another Neurology appointment for December at Hairmyers which to an extent I am happy about. However, I am not happy about how the consultant from the first appointment seems to be suggesting that symptoms which were discussed have not been when actually these were some of my main ones.

I also feel that the time taken for all this to happen is well over what it should be, it will be over a year since I first visited my GP and still have symptoms without a diagnosis and is beginning to make me quite anxious.
