"I felt belittled"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Dermatology

(as the patient),

My psoriasis had flared up quite badly recently so I was looking forward to getting to speak to a dermatologist, rather than a GP.

From the start of the appointment, I didn't feel listened to, continuously cut me off, and didn't ask me much about what prompted me to be there. I had to force the things I was concerned about into the conversation they were repeatedly dismissed.

I was told I’d get light therapy without explaining to me it was a 2/3 day a week commitment for 9 weeks, and there seemed to be an expectation that I was free all the time.

When it came to being asked if I was on any other medication, I informed that I was on an antidepressant to help with my anxiety, to which the reply was that I should use mindfulness exercises and that I "don’t need to be on them” and shook their head about it. A couple minutes later, it was suggested that I should get off them as soon as possible. There was no dermatology-related reasoning for this. I felt that this was rude and hurtful.

I didn't defend it and just said what I had to till I could leave.

Dear Chewie

I was very concerned to receive your care opinion posting following recent attendance at Dermatology clinic at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

We expect staff to be helpful, courteous and compassionate at all times when they attend our service.

I am very sorry that you did have a positive experience when and unreservedly apologise on behalf of the service.

This will be fully discussed and addressed with the Dermatology team in the department, this included emphasising the level of care and communication we require staff to provide at all times.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact me on email below.

Your sincerely

Update posted by Chewie (the patient)

Hi Con,

I appreciate your response and action. I would like to mention that the nurse who spoke to me afterwards and explained light therapy was lovely and patient so there was a silver lining.

Thanks
