(as the patient),

Today I ran out my medicine & was in such severe back pain etc that an ambulance took me to Royal Infirmary were I was seen in half an hour then waiting to see doc, but I was told I was 3-4 on list, & a nurse said "You'd be at the bottom" and "we are not a Pharmacy or medicine department". I told them that I'm in severe pain & they are telling me they cant help me. "Yes" was reply so waited over 1 hour & discharged myself with no pain relief. Terrible attitude by nurse in my opinion. So now what do they expect me to do. Disgusted & shocked.

Dear Microscopiumsq45,

I was sorry to hear of you recent experience within the ED at Glasgow Royal Infirmary when you ran out of your medicines.

Emergency departments should not be used in such situations and I am disappointed to hear that the Scottish Ambulance brought you into the emergency dept.on this occasion. More appropriate support for you could have been provided by your GP or community pharmacy in respect of medicines supply.

There will be a community advertising campaign over the Winter months to highlight the importance of the appropriate use of emergency departments.This campaign will also serve to highlight the availability of other community resources.
