"Diverticulitis & recurrent U.T.I."

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

In early Aug I felt unwell and in a lot of pain when going to the toilet which felt a lot like cystitis {suffered from chronic cystitis yrs ago} so on the Wednesday I went to the chemist and got Trimethoprim {3dy course} which only got worse over the weekend About a week later I had to get emergency app at surgery and was put on Nitrofurantoin {5dy course} which also didn't work and escalated along with a sharp pain in lower left abdomen So another emergency app was made for later that week which resulted in admittance to C.A.U  Crosshouse hospital for a scan which I didn't get, had intravenous Ciprofluxacin Friday night and sent home with {7dy course} on the Saturday  the doctor also mentioned Diverticulitis of which I knew nothing about.  finished the course of antibiotics and still felt unwell and went to A&E and was advised to go onto a high fibre diet given co-codamol for the pain {which makes me constipated} and again told it was Diverticulitis.

From then until mid September everything seemed to calm down to a bearable level I also had app with doctor that day and asked about Diverticulitis and how can they tell with just prodding your stomach.  The doctor went through my medical notes and found a letter which confirmed severe diverticulitis after a scope that I had in 2011 of which no one told me  the results of that procedure.   A couple of days after that I started to feel ill again with a U.T.I. had another app and got trimethoprim {7dy course] which gave me some pain relief then I started to feel unwell again.   I tried to flush my system but it didn't work and a week later I was back at surgery with symptoms of U.T.I. and severe pain in lower left hand side of abdomen and was put on Co-amoxiclav {7dy course} and again 17 days later I am  back at the surgery with severe pain when urinating.  Mid Oct I got Trimethoprim {7dy course} which again did not work and resulted in a tele consultation with doctor a week later and Ciprofluxacin {7dy course} that didn't work and resulted in another app and a 10dy course of cefalexin and Nitrofurantoin to take at night after my original course I have also asked to be referred to a urologist and dietician.   I have been off my work 3 times in 3 mths hence why I wanted a low dose of antibiotics to try and keep this infection bearable until I get to a urologist and hopefully prevent me from being ill and off work again .I am also getting support from O.H. at work.

So in the space of 3mths I have had 8 prescriptions of antibiotics sent away a lot of urine samples and blood and feel that I am  going round in circles and getting nowhere Can anyone tell me how long the waiting list is for a referral to urology and a dietician? I am now feeling  depressed and don't really want to leave the house in case I need the toilet and the pain gets that bad that people notice there is something wrong also I want to get back to work.

Can anyone advise me on what else I can do

Regards

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear jessmc3,

I am so sorry, this must be impacting on your life immensely.

I have a few options about how we may be able to help.

As you know, your post is anonymous so without your details, we can’t look into the specifics of your situation. However if your GP has referred you to Urology, you can phone Ayr Hospital on 01292 610555 and ask to speak to one of the Urology Secretaries. Although, if your GP has referred you as ‘routine’ I was advised that there is a wait of around 12 weeks for an outpatient appointment. The secretary will help you establish what the current situation is regarding your appointment.

If the urgency has changed, please discuss this with your GP. The GP can also contact the on-call Urologist for advice.

I hope this is of some help and that you get your appointment soon.

Best wishes,

Eunice

Update posted by jessmc3 (the patient)

Hi Eunice

Thankyou for reading and replying to my story

I have not heard from Urology or a Dietician as yet but the GP at my surgery has referred me for a colonoscopy which I stated to every GP in the last 8 appointments that I would not be willing to go through with that procedure again {due to past experience and trauma} I did state that I would go through another CT enema scan if needed or any other options they might have.

Unfortunately I now feel trapped into a procedure that I really do not want to go through again and I am very upset about this obviously no one has listened to me at my surgery I really do not no where to turn or what to do next.

regards
