"3 months wait for tongue tie cut"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73)

(as a service user),

My baby was born in April and had a tongue tie which prevented her from breastfeeding. To have the tongue tie cut we would have had to wait until July as they have a long waiting list due to one member of staff only doing this for the whole of Glasgow. If we had waited 3 months there is no way we would have managed to breastfeed. We therefore had no other option but to go private to get the tongue tie cut which cost us £200. It was done within a week and a couple of weeks after that our baby finally latched on.

The tongue tie should really been dealt at hospital when breastfeeding is being established or have more staff available for getting it done at the local clinics.

£200 is a lot of money and it means it will prevent a lot of people to breastfeed.
We experienced great support at the Yorkhill infant feeding clinic and from Margaret from NCT.
Our baby is now 6 months old and I am so glad we are still managing to breastfeed.

Dear MarionP

I am writing in response to your posting on Care Opinion regarding the waiting time for Frenotomy. I am the Lead Nurse who has responsibility for the Specialist Infant Feeding Clinics including Frenotomy. I am really sorry that the earliest appointment available to you for frenotomy was in 3 months and as a result you opted to have the procedure performed privately.

There have been several challenges delivering an effective and reliable frenotomy service with only one staff member trained to undertake the procedure. As from this week all referrals for frenotomy will now be seen by the Paediatric ENT service at Royal Hospital for Children. This change will enable us to provide a reliable and timely service going forward.I am really pleased to hear that the frenotomy was a success and you are still successfully breast feeding your baby
