"Excellent person-centred care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Recently, I had occasion to attend the DSU at University Hospital Wishaw for a minor orthopaedic procedure.

From my arrival, to my discharge, I was treated with nothing but respect, kindness and courtesy.

Due to a small complication, I had to return to theatre, unfortunately at the end of the list - as a theatre nurse myself I know how frustrating this can be. Especially when you are cleaning and setting up for the following day, however the staff in theatre were incredibly reassuring and put me at ease, considering that I was still affected by the previous anaesthetic and wasn't feeling particularly well.

A special mention must go to HCSW Elspeth, who maintains the waiting system for day cases. She has created a peaceful and quiet space for patients. Elspeth is a particularly kind individual who goes a long way to ease people's fears. Whilst waiting to go to theatre, I observed her dealing with a variety of patients and their worries. She informed everyone of the progress of their individual theatre and involving patient's this way, reduced their anxiety of them not knowing when they will be going to theatre. After all someone is always first someone is always last; the lack of information for patients' can be frustrating.

When delivering unfortunate news regarding a cancellation, she delivered the information in a sensitive and empathetic manner, whilst respecting the patient's needs and wishes.

Overall, excellent and person-centred safe care.

Dear SET, thank you so much for posting your feedback on Care opinion.

It is great to hear that you feel you were treated with respect, kindness and courtesy from admission to discharge and you felt your care was safe and person-centred. This is the care our team strive to deliver for every patient every day in Day Surgery.

Returning to theatre with even a small complication must have been very stressful for you especially as you weren’t feeling very well. I’m sure the theatre team will appreciate hearing that their reassurance made a difference. I’ll ensure your feedback is passed on to them.

Elspeth will be delighted to see your lovely comments, thank you for recognising her invaluable input. We are really lucky to have her!

I hope you are recovering well at home.

Kind regards, Lynne.
