"Referral service"

My GP made an urgent referral for my baby due to possible serious sight issues. Despite this it took several days for the referral service to write me a letter telling me to call them. It took 6 days after my GP made the referral for the letter to arrive. I rang immediately only to be told that the referral service can't make appointments for the hospital in my city and only now would the referral be passed to the actual hospital... Until then no information had reached the hospital. I now have to wait for yet another letter... This time from the hospital... Telling me if my gp's urgent referral has been accepted at all and if so an actual appointment. Cannot believe how convoluted and slow the process is for urgent referrals or that NHS is still sending out these letters - instead of using email - wasting precious time and of course taxpayers' money. I'm really unhappy with the referral system
