"Medical records"

About: The Lawson Practice

(as the patient),

According to government websites, patients medical records belong to the patients. Does this mean all patient records belongs to the patients, ie both paper records and electronic records? If electronic records, how much information is given to the patients,   I know some information have to be redacted ie information that might be bad for us or information related to third parties, but can the GP give us a proper, a full record without missing information, I mean when the doctors scribble notes on our records, will that information be included or just headings.

The patient record actually belongs to the NHS but you are entitled to see it. You are right that we have to remove information that relates to other people or information thought to be harmful to you. You are able to access your records if you wish. Please come in to the surgery and ask for the reception manager who can organise this for you.Alternatively you can ask for on-line access enabling you to access at any time certain parts of your records at home.

I hope this is helpful.

I can see you felt my response was unhelpful. I thought I had answered all your questions. This leaves me wondering what else I could have said and what else I could do to be helpful. It would be great if you able to explain further?

I have already spoken with your reception manager. Your staff have been very unhelpful. And by providing us, the patients with limited information, how is that helpful to us as a patients, how is limited information, that only has headings, help us. Headings on medical records doesn’t give a full story, if you have a head injury, how will do the heading tell us whether that happened in an accident or by domestic violence. If I was to share that information with a third party, how will they know what context that heading is relating to.
