I have ITP, a condition that I have had over 10 years (maybe longer/first diagnosed) and I manage this well in the haematology clinic with no life changing or altering effects which is brilliant.
However it came to a point where I was recommended to have Dental Implants which are not available on the NHS so I had to find and work with two private practitioners, a Max Facial Surgeon Dr Paley and a dentist.
With ITP being in the background the first thing I did is to discuss with Dr McNeil at St Johns Hospital Livingston. From the start he was positive around giving guidance on what preparation was needed while also making sure I understand the stages and what was needed. The care he and his department including nurses Martin & Jill was just exceptional and prepared me for attending surgery. I am normally quite nervous in these situations but I was strangely calm as I knew I had the right guidance & knowledge, I had the correct treatment at the right time to counter the low platelet count and also the trust of the team.
The conclusion was that the surgery went well and importantly minimal bleeding & swelling but also at all stages the team including Dr McNeil were updating me from a Haematology point of view and throughout more importantly they liased with Dr Paley to make sure his surgery was done with the expert knowledge needed.
I cannot thank Dr McNeil, Martin & Jill and the rest of the team enough, any organisation is perceived by how its people operate and they are dedicated but also incredibly human.
"A difficult procedure needing teamwork across disciplines"
