I am a carer for my 90 year old husband who had an outpatients appointment. There were horrendous queues of cars and buses just to get in to the hospital site, as the car parks were full, so we were late arriving.
Finally parked a long way from the area my husband was meant to be, and he can only walk a few steps. Left him in the coffee lounge and ran to reception, explaining our situation and asking if there was a wheelchair I could use. Blank looks, and mutterings about being late!
He was booked in, and someone apparently rang for a porter, but nobody appeared. Eventually I spotted a porter unloading an elderly lady into an ambulance, and hi-jacked the wheelchair, running with my husband to the waiting room for his appointment.
As it happened the clinic was running about 40 minutes late, so we were seen quickly once we arrived. The doctor was excellent. We were left feeling very stressed.
