"Life-changing"

About: Cheltenham General Hospital

Having always enjoyed an active, sporting life: squash, cycling, walking etc - and expecting to do more of this on retirement - I suffered deteriorating mobility over several years - to the point of falling over from numb legs and intense hip pain. No sporting activity - and worse, even just walking short distances - was a bitter blow to me. The outlook looked very depressing. After several scans: Ultra sound and CT angiogram, blocked arteries were identified and a bilateral common iliac artery stenting procedure was decided upon as a solution. The position of the blocked arteries was very close to the aorta, which concerned me greatly. However, the consultant and his team - including the vascular nurse - were very reassuring, me being a worrying type who had never had a procedure in all of my 63 years. The procedure went smoothly - the surgeons explaining to me what they were doing, in layman's terms, as I lay on the operating table - and was a success, with a one night stay on the ward afterwards. The after-care on the ward was excellent, the staff friendly. I couldn't believe that walking around the hospital carpark on leaving the next day that I was symptom-free. I cannot praise the vascular team and ward staff highly enough - they really have completely changed my life and an active retirement is now back on course . Thankyou for your skills and after-care.
