"Speakeasy support group"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I've just been to the AGM of the Lanarkshire "Speakeasy" group, which is a support group for those on a journey with all variations of  head and neck cancers.    What a privilege to know all these amazing people.

We had a very informative presentation from one of the surgical consultants at Monklands and representations from numerous levels of NHS staff including specialist nurses from the famous "Ward 9".

I'm now 5 years on in my recovery ( laryngectomy) and it's still stuns me, how committed all those involved in my care just keep giving more.    I've been involved with hospitals my whole life due to my mothers varius chronic illnesses and have seen care at all levels of the spectrum.

The success of the Head & Neck staff on ward 9, is in my opinion, down to the teamwork they have between all staff involved. From the moment you arrive on the ward, everyone from the lead Consultant to the person helping to keep you room clean and infection free, just all want to make your journey a little more tolerable at every opportunity.

The Speakeasy support group is there to listen to your concerns, offer good practical advice based on real life experience and to support you through your journey.   They are aware of all specialist support services available, and are always the first on my list, when seeking out support information.  The group meets monthly in Wishaw and has regular social events throughout the year.

I look forward to meeting the "Team" soon and  watching their continued success.

Regards & Admiration

Dear Bill81

I am sure that your very kind and sincere words will give the whole Head and Neck team a real boost, and I will be delighted to share your post with them.

The type of teamwork and person-centred care you describe is what I know the team always strive to provide for the people they look after, so it is really heartening to know that this has been your experience.

The Speakeasy group sounds like a wonderful resource for people with head and neck cancer, and I am sure it is incredibly valued by all those who attend.

Sincere thanks for taking the time to pass on your feedback, and best wishes for your continued good health.

Nichola
