"A credit to the unit"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Royal Derby Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I suffered a heart attack in the early hours of the morning. My wife called an Ambulance from EMAS and within a few minutes I was being attended to and was taken to the Coronary Care unit at Derby Royal Hospital. Unbeknown to me at the time a team of Surgeons , Doctors , nurses etc were waiting for me and performed surgery at about 0300hrs that morning in order to save my life. I had stents fitted and whilst they were performing the surgery it was noticed that I had another artery that was 80% blocked. The consultant informed me that they did not have time to do this at the time , however promised that he would do the other artery within 14 days. True to his word he fixed the other artery.

This unit and the staff within it from the Surgeons , doctors , nurses , auxiliary staff, cleaners , etc were outstanding throughout my stay in Hospital. Not only did they save my life, my care was at the forefront of their minds at all times and other patients within the unit.

These people are truly remarkable people and all they have to do at the end of their shifts is say to themselves:

"What have I done today to make me feel proud" and the answer they should come up with is simply "I save lives".

A credit to the NHS , a credit to Derby Royal , a credit to the coronary care unit and a credit to humanity.

God bless you all.

Hello Wilsthorpe,

Thank you for sharing your kind words about our ambulance crew who came out to you when you needed them, and I do hope you are feeling better much now.

If you are able, we would appreciate you sharing your comments with our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team, with as much detail as you can (e.g. date, time and location), so that they might identify the ambulance crew who cared for you, pre-alerted the hospital to arrange the help when you arrived at the hospital, and share your words with them. You may contact them via telephone on 0333 012 4216 or email emas.pals@nhs.net.

Best wishes,

Samantha Westwell
Ambulance Operations Manager for Derbyshire

Update posted by Wilsthorpe (the patient)

The Ambulance staff who attended, I think their names were Mark and a young girl called Holly. In fact I think it was only her third day on the job.

I have to say that both these members of EMAS were an absolute credit to themselves and EMAS. If was not for their quick assessment of my condition and the fact that they had the foresight to inform Coronary care that I was on my way I would not be here today possibly.

These two people should be recognised for their professionalism and their care of myself.

I have nothing but utmost admiration for them both for how they cared for me in a critical situation I was in.

Soon after this I did post an e-mail to EMAS, but not knowing if it would be received.

Again a credit to themselves, EMAS, the NHS and their families.

Thanks very much and merry xmas.
