"I have not seen a specialist for 2years"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Neurology

(as the patient),

Moved from glasgow neurology clinic to lanarkshire neurology at hairmyres. It was good that it was more local and they had a specialist nurse because they were invaluuable at helping me through the worst of my condition! However they have cancelled 3 of my appointments despite medicinal changes then was informed the specialist nurse had left which they have not replaced or tried to, to my knowledge. This means I have not seen a specialist for 2years. Clearly neurology services need more investment or to be improved but thank you to all who are still there working hard. Dont even know who my gp is at the moment because that surgery collapsed and got taken over affecting my treatment because the could not access files to change my prescription so had to break up tablets myself for a few weeks. I really feel I want to move to the glasgow nhs if things dont get improved.

Dear Larisa08

Than you for taking the time to contact us via Care Opinion. I am very sorry to hear of your situation which is obviously not the situation we want our patients to be in. I sincerely apologise for this on behalf of the hospital.

Currently, there are issues nationally within the Neurology service. The service here at NHS Lanarkshire is managed centrally by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, and our Neurology clinicians are actually employees of the NHS GG&C board. There have been recognised national shortages of clinicians within the service which have made it difficult to recruit to vacancies, and also made it difficult to provide cover during holidays, sickness and to backfill staff retirals etc. We can only apologise for this and try to reassure you that both Boards have been working collaboratively to overcome these issues.

When we have had urgent issues with patients needing an urgent review (outwith planned routine reviews), or medication changes etc GPs have been highlighting this to us and we have been doing all we can to get these patients directed appropriately. Given the situation with your GP, I do not want to cause anymore delay to yourself in getting directed to the corrected Neurology treatment, so can I ask you to contact myself direct to pass on a few more details to enable us to help you as best we can. If you call 01355 584488 you can be passed through directly and we can discuss this further.

Please accept my apologies again for this situation.

Kind Regards

Hazel
