"My current medication is keeping me sane"

About: Airbles Road Centre / General Psychiatry

(as a service user),

I have been attending psychiatry at Airbles Road day centre in Motherwell for sometime now. During my time attending Airbles Road day centre I have been seen by a number of psychiatrists and thought that the psychiatrist I am seeing just now was the best one by far - how wrong could I have been? .

I thought that my psychiatrist was listening to me and my partner who had to give up work to become my full time carer, but obviously I was wrong. My partner is registered as my carer with Lanarkshire carers centre. I suffer from severe anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and often get feelings that I have done something bad to my partner or someone else. I have been prescribed mental health medications for a number of years now. I am currently prescribed antidepressants, antipsychotics and a sedative which is being reduced each month until I'm at 0mg. All of these mental health medications I take daily to help me.

My psychiatrist said at my last meeting that if my condition doesn't improve by the next meeting then my medications will all be reduced down to 0mg which I think is a absolute disgrace. I don't think my psychiatrist knows how much my anxiety depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and other mental health conditions affect me and my partner. Before I was on the current medication I am on just now I was washing my hands a hundred times approximately a day. Now I wash my hands 10 times a day and if I touch anything else I use a hand sanitizer.

I have forwarded the email I sent to patient affairs on to the most senior manager of NHS Lanarkshire, my MSP and the health secretary. In my opinion the only thing to keep me sane and on the straight and narrow is to keep me on my current medication. If my current psychiatrist disagrees with me then I'd like to be seen by another psychiatrist based at Airbles Road.

I would also like to add that my psychiatrist said that long term use of these sedatives can cause dementia but research carried out in both Canada and France has shown that this can't be proven. The thought of leaving me without any medication has left me paranoid, anxious and suicidal.
