"Recent gallbladder removal"

About: Southmead Hospital / accident & emergency Southmead Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I recently underwent surgery at Southmead Hospital to have my gallbladder removed, and cannot fault the service I received from the moment of phoning 111 because of the pain I was in to the moment I left the hospital having had the operation.

I was getting bouts of pain spasmodically but came to a head in one terrible time 7 weeks after I had given birth to my first baby in June. On phoning 111 I was sent a paramedic who was incredibly reassuring and calming, considering I had no idea what the pain was and was worried it might have been something relating to giving birth. We had a very reasonable wait at A&E before I was seen but after this the staff were swift to assess me and come up with 2 possible options of what the problem might be. I was then booked an ultrasound for the following day which revealed I had gallstones and then had 2 further appointments with consultants the 2 days following this. I had my pre-op assessment 1 week later, and the operation another week after that. I had heard all sorts of stories from others about the long waiting list for this operation but I could not have asked for more speed and care considering I had a young baby to care for too. Prior to and after the operation the nurses caring for me did everything they could and were always making sure I was comfortable and giving me all the help they could. Also of note was the care of the theatre staff and anaesthetist who made me feel as relaxed as possible and were incredibly friendly and down to earth.

The staff at Southmead do an incredible job and can't thank them enough for everything they do every day in helping so many people.
