"My Dad"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My dad suffered an injury and was taken to conservator ward for care. I personally feel the staff are nice people and none are out to harm anybody but they have shown poor care skills.

Scenario  - one day my dad was on full fluids and on a certain level diet and this was plainly written by a speech and language therapist as it should be in the wall behind his bed. When I came in the next day a nurse over night had written on his menu NBM, so this meant that he had no food ordered. When questioned by me the nurse said sorry, it was written in error.

A few hours later the health assistant giving out the lunches looked at me and gestures that he’s obviously NBM so he wouldn’t give him anything . I explained that if they read the back of his bed it clearly stated the level of diet he was on and fluids. Nothing was said but 20 minutes later they came back with a plate of food.

Then a 3rd person came along lifted the plate and walked away. Saying or asking nothing like , is he going to try and eat? or mention to anybody else that he had eaten nothing, they just did their job and walked on.

All of this adds up to poor care skills. The fact remains that when working for the nhs everybody from the people that mop the floors to the people that sit behind the desk and in an office should have a skill where car is their primary goal. I understand everyone has their own job that they need to get on with but it’s important that the employees don’t see themselves as just a worker in the nhs it’s important that they see that everything they do and see and don’t do has an outside effect on the patients and their colleagues. Caring safe and respectful is a sole statement of the NHS . Quite honestly everybody has bad days everyone struggles but when you enter an NHS building in you uniform with your badge on those troubles should be set aside and your super hero abilities should kick in. Somewhere along the line we lost that and I suspect it’s going to be blamed on  funding over worked etc. But my totally honest answer to that is . If you can’t put a face on if you can’t give 100% then find a different job outside the NHS. I’d like to say I recognise there are so many people in the nhs that make that difference because their attitude is just that , an excellent one. I’d also like to mention that the nhs don’t do enough to support their staff mentally or physically . Yes there are startagies in place to help people but it’s too small . Staff need support it should be just as important as the care given to patients. Kind regards

A fellow colleague in the uk and a patients som ;-)

Thank you for your feedback.

I am sorry that your father had this experience on the ward.

I have raised your concerns with all of the nursing staff and we are working to improve on our meal service to ensure patient are getting the correct diet that they require. We are also making sure the bed boards are updated daily to reflect the specialist diets that are required

I am sorry that we didn't get it right for your Father, this is not how we like to care for our patients.

Thank you for your general comments which as a ward we acknowledge

I do hope that your Father is making good progress
