When my first pacemaker was replaced after nine years, it became apparent that the replacement box was bigger than the original.
I was very distressed - not so much at the physical appearance (although it protruded from my chest, whereas the first one didn't), but at the fact that I was aware of its presence every time I moved my left arm.
It didn't hurt, but was a most unpleasant sensation.
After several discussions with the surgeon, and technicians within the pacemaker unit, it was agreed that the large box would be replaced with a smaller box, some 12 weeks later.
The additional risk of a third cut, so soon after the second one, was explained clearly to me, but I requested that the procedure be carried out.
A smaller box was sourced, which is over 40% smaller, and this was inserted last week.
I now feel mightily relieved, and am confident that I will be unaware of its presence when the incision and bruising have healed.
I have nothing but praise for the way the consultant and his team treated me, and for their concern that I should be completely satisfied with the outcome.
They are a truly wonderful, and caring team.
