"Relative in Hospital"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

My relative is an inpatient and I live 200 miles away and rely on staff updating me on their condition over the phone. Today I phoned to be told all was fine and there were no issues to be then told by a visiting relative that they had fallen and had badly hurt their hip. If nurses can't be honest how can I trust anything I am told?

Dear Silver 1962

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am sorry to read that your relative had a fall whilst in hospital and I appreciate how worrying it is when you live so far away.

Due to patient confidentiality there is a limit to what information staff can give over the telephone. I am unsure if you are the next of kin for your relative, but when a patient has a fall, staff discuss this with the patient and their next of kin. If you wish we can look into this further but we would need some additional information. With your relative’s permission can you forward their name and date of birth to my colleague, Sheila (Sheila.Dickson@ggc.scot.nhs.uk ).

Please pass on my best wishes to your relative.

Kind Regards

Nicole
