"Plastic waste in Southmead"

About: Southmead Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I have noticed that the catering at Southmead uses non-recyclable black plastic containers when providing meals for patients. It has also been brought to my attention that unused food (E. G. Sandwiches) may be being put in the bin rather than given to others when it is hygienically appropriate. This amount of waste is unacceptable and unethical. I am sure that an appropriate alternative can be found to show that Southmead and North Bristol NHS Trust wants to do their bit to reduce waste and protect our environment.

Thank you.

Dear L.Alston,

Thank you for your comments regarding the observations you have made whilst attending Southmead Hospital.

I can confirm that you are correct the Trust does not recycle its patient food containers but this is something we are looking into, regrettably there is not an easy solution due to many factors which we are actively looking to address.

With regards to unused sandwiches these are not discarded (put in a bin) until the use by date has expired.

After meal service any unused hot food is discarded as cook chill food would be not safe to reheat or serve.

Thank you again for your comments. Sue Needs, Advice & Complaints Team Manager
