"NHS podiatry care of dementia patients in private homes"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Podiatry

(as a relative),

My mother is in a care home East Kilbride. She has Type 2 Diabetes and need foot care, careful trimming of toe nails and hard skin care. Because of the Dementia she will not allow any one but professionals to attend to this the problem is if we want to use NHS the patient has to go to them very difficult with dementia patient they decide themselves when the are going to co-operate you do not. This leaves the expensive option of a private practitioner coming to the home and the associated cost.

With over 53 beds in the home surely NHS could do a group visit it would be more cost effective less distributive for patients making them more likely to co=operate and less traumatic for them when they get out see freedom and then have to be put back in. This needs common sense approach. I also have this condition I know from personal experience how painful it can be if not attended to and how difficult it makes simple movements like enjoying a walk.

Thanks you for taking the time to comment about the podiatry services and that of the care options for your mother, we value these comments as it is important that we hear from service users and carers so that we are aware of any issues.

The podiatry service has a Residential and Care Homes Podiatry Team who are responsible for the provision of podiatry care to patients within this setting. All patient who meet the referral criteria will be treated and usually the team would treat a number of patients while they are calling to the home. There are occasions that the team may call to see one patient who is in need of a follow up treatment. I trust this is a helpful response but happy to provide any other information if required.
