"AE went for a break and didn't care"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital / Accident and emergency

Having been there a few evenings on the trot, and getting to know how your system worked, was completely amazed that the triage nurse you first see does not examine you, seems bizarre and a waste of a nurses skills, took them nearly 4 hours to actually examine me.

If the 2 nurses in triage worked the patients instead of basically being receptionists, their queue would go much quicker.Worst than that though is that between around 5 and 6.30 the place seemed to come to a standstill with no-one going into the treatment rooms in urgent care, I asked at reception if anyone was actually working there at that time, having watched the door for nearly 50 minutes with no one going in and was told they were on a break, surely not all staff go on a break together? When I was eventually seen the nurse said 'did I not realise that I had to wait 2-3 hours' basically what she was saying was; you haven't quite waited long enough, even though one of us was free to see you.

If the mangers look at the CCTV for the department they will see how it comes to a standstill at this time. Another issue is that for someone who is really poorly, only hard seats and nowhere to lie down. It seems to be lacking one person in charge, who would be keeping an eye on the waiting room and asking - why are they still here? No one seemed to be in charge there.
