Sent for mri scan from A+E. Given the 'bulb' / buzzer for if I was uncomfortable or had any problems. Whilst in the machine I became very claustrophobic and pressed the buzzer. Nothing happened and I pressed it several more times to no effect. I panicked and tried to scramble out of the machine. When I was half way out the technician entered the room and assisted me out. I was very shaken and he asked why I hadn't used the buzzer. I said that I had - several times. On inspection he checked and the buzzer was not attached and so inoperable. He noted that he and his colleague had been chatting and they had not noticed me in difficulty - clearly they were not overseeing me. Once out and standing the technician noticed a disposable lighter in the mri scanner bed and asked if it was mine. I confirmed that it was NOT and must have belonged to a previous patient. I was completely naked under the hospital gowns and haven't smoked for 30 years. After returning to CDU and advising the original doctor that I had been unable to complete the scan I became very upset and started shaking and became emotional. Since then I have had uncharacteristic bouts of panic, headaches and insomnia. I have also been anxious about being left on my own. I have never experienced anything like this before and clearly the mri fiasco has been the trigger. I have not sought further medical advice since I prefer to recover quietly at home without further medical intervention even though this will mean suffering the discomforts of the original medical problem with which I presented to A+E.
