"Waiting Times for Hip Replacement Surgery"

About: West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital (Yorkhill)

(as a relative),

I am writing on behalf of my father is currently on the waiting list for a hip replacement and the estimated waiting time for this procedure is approximately 10 months.

He had a MRI performed earlier this year, which confirmed a diagnosis of osteoarthritis in the spine, hips and knee.  Due to this condition my father is suffering immense pain and his current prescription of analgesia is ineffective.  Recently, his mobility is far worse, he drags his leg whilst walking and is in constant pain.  As a family we see how his health has deteriorated rapidly over the last few months. For example he can no longer enjoy simple pleasures like walking the dog and taking care of his garden and can no longer drive. He is losing his independance   The pain has become a real challenge.  His sleep is disturbed at night and even the weight of his duvet is too uncomfortable for him to cope with.  The physical impact of his condition is also affecting his psychological well being.  His mood can be low at times and he is quite irritable.  He feels tired and even exhausted due to the pain. We are worried that this may predispose to depression.

It is distressing to watch, I wouldn't allow anyone to suffer like this.

I have written to his GP suggesting a repeat MRI as currently he has been labelled as 'routine' but his condition is far worse and further investigations would confirm this. He requires surgery now and not in a years time.

Dear Portnahaven

Thank you for highlighting your concerns regarding your Dad’s wait for a hip replacement and the impact this is having on his quality of life.

Regrettably our Orthopaedic services have been experiencing an extended waiting time, in excess of the national waiting time standard of 12 weeks.

There are a number of factors which are impacting on our capacity and I wish to assure you that we are making every effort to reduce the waiting times for our patients and improve the service that we provide.

You mention that you have contacted your Dad’s GP, the GP can provide a clinical update to the Orthopaedic Team.

Kind Regards

Nicole
