"From start to finish – thank you!"

What follows is just a very short reflection of my experience with NHS Lanarkshire, and a note of thanks to all those who were involved in my care.

Following a visit to my GP practice and having received a few telephone calls (from my ‘next of kin’ and NHS 24), I found myself unexpectedly at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department of University Hospital Monklands.  In a ward nearby the A&E department, I was initially, and promptly, treated for my condition.  I gratefully acknowledge all staff who were involved in my initial treatment. 

I was then admitted to ward 17 (Respiratory) – and yes, a cheery porter got me there! 

Upon my arrival, I was promptly and pleasantly greeted by two members of the nursing team, and was asked about my requirements (via a person-centred care form). 

I note this isn’t quite the platform to say “thanks” to my family.  However, in the interest of other patients who might be reading this; I just want to acknowledge the importance of having loved ones around you.  Given the unexpected nature of stay, my family were extremely supportive. 

Also, thanks to all staff who interacted with me to make my stay a pleasant and welcoming one.  In particular, much credit to the nursing and clinical support staff in ward 17, and to those staff in the ward where I was initially treated.  Thanks also to the catering and domestic staff, the doctors on call, my GP practice, and all those who interacted with me.  Behind the scenes, I am sure there were others: for example, the healthcare scientists and administrative/clerical staff, etc. 

I would like to consider myself as normally fit and healthy!  So, this experience was all relatively new for me.  It was interesting to see how my care involved a range of departments and services.  It was quite an eye-opener!  It was also interesting to observe how nurses interacted with fellow patients to lighten loads and try to make the best of situations. 

After about three nights and three days in hospital, I was discharged.  Thankfully, I am feeling *much* better. 

I have more observations, insights, and personal reflections about my experience.  However, I was simply keen to send this quick note of appreciation to all those who were involved in my care – particularly to staff in ward 17 of University Hospital Monklands, and to anyone else who interacted with me regarding my care.
