"Unpleasant experience at a recent PET scan appointment."

About: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre New Victoria Hospital (Glasgow) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / General medicine (Wards 5d)

(as the patient),

Firstly I would like to say that due to my cancer diagnosis I have been in the system since 2011, again in 2017 until the present day.

My diagnosis has involved numerous appointments, scans, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

I have had the very best care and attention from all staff involved in the above.

I cannot praise or thank them enough.

All of the above have taken place at the QUEH, Victoria Inf and the Beatson.

Unfortunately due to a new diagnosis I have had to undertake another round of scans, one of which was a PET scan at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

This took place recently.

I arrived at the centre for my appointment and was attended by a lovely, pleasant and welcoming receptionist.

Sadly the same cannot be said for the rest of my appointment.

It was appalling, I was called through to the dept by a sullen hcsw who didn't even introduce themselves.

There was absolutely no communication throughout my entire appointment.

When the Radiographer appeared at the cubicle they addressed their colleague only merely to ask if they were in !!! So that they could return with my injection.

There was no Care, Compassion and certainly no Communication.

Although I had a previous pet scan in 2017, nothing was conveyed regarding the scan.

I am claustrophobic and came prepared with my eyemask and I had taken 2mg of Diazepam... at no point did anyone enquire as to how I was.

The whole experience was awful, I kept thinking to myself how would someone like my mum feel if it was her appointment.

It appeared as if the whole thing was a chore for all staff concerned.

Not one member of the 3 staff who had any interaction with me smiled, introduced themselves, explained what was going to happen or put me at ease at any time throughout my whole appointment.

It saddens me that I had to come onto your website but it really was that bad, I would never treat a patient the way I was treated at my appointment.

I now wish I had came onto your website previously to say how wonderful everyone in all depts has been in the past.

Dear Very dissatisfied

I’m very sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience in PET. This is not what I would expect from any staff within the department.

It is essential that all patients should be fully informed of what is happening at every step of their journey through the department and it is our hope that patients experience patient focussed care. Staff are asked to introduce themselves to patients as they arrive and whenever they meet a patient for the first time (they should all wear name badges). Staff take patients through a questionnaire when they come in to the department, and as part of this they should ask whether patients suffer from claustrophobia. Where the patient indicates that they are claustrophobic they should be shown the camera and potentially try it out before being given their radioactive injection.

The department is busy and due to the natural decay of the tracer we need to ensure that the throughput of patients is effectively managed to ensure the highest quality of scan; however, this is no excuse for the cursory way that you have been treated.

We will raise your experience with all staff in the department emphasising the importance of compassionate care and the need to ensure that all steps are fully communicated with our patients. Any visit to hospital is stressful and unpleasant and we would like to be doing everything possible to improve the patient experience.

Yours sincerely

Sandy Small
