"Crohn's disease - Operation aftercare"

About: Western General Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a relative),

My brother has been suffering from Crohn's disease for more than 5 years. He has been dealing with specialist based within EWGH (Edinburgh's Western General hospital) for most of a very large majority of this time.

My most recent experience has been one of disappointment, angry and feeling helpless. This is not the first and I am sad to day I do not believe will be the last time specialist at the aforementioned hospital will fail its patients. It seems to me that neither the hospital or the department have a sufficient care quality procedure in place or audit process.

My brother after having undergone an operation to remove abscess from within his bowls (an operation that required for him to be on food substitutes for 12 weeks) has a flare up. This flareup resulted in him being seen by his GP and referred to EWGH. At the hospital he was not seen by his consultant, upon enquiring it emerged the doctor due to see over see his after-operation care had been moved to another hospital.

He has had no contact with anyone about his care he has had no document or discussion about what the procedure found. He was originally referred for an operation after his then consultant (another specialist who was moved) prolonged his quarterly meeting for nine months.

Me and my family are so confused and disappointed that we are unaware what we could possibly do. If I were to be referred to EWGH’s gastrologic department I would request to be transferred some where else.

I would like to add the nurses are undertaking and the A&E doctors (only two other groups I have had dealings with) are undertaking a very hard task in very trying circumstances. They have at been very polite and understanding.
