I was recently treated on I1 ward at the Hallamshire Hospital where I underwent a procedure under general anesthetic.
I have complex mental health problems that lead to me being quite distressed at times and not the easiest patient to contend with. However I was treated with care, respect, a compassionate and non-judgemental approach and staff were not “scared off” by my mental illness as can sometimes happen. Staff communicated with me in whichever way was most appropriate for me at the time (sometimes I am non-verbal) and made sure to keep me up to date on what was happening as I can sometimes get confused. They helped to calm me down when I was distressed or upset - everyone from support workers, an amazing trainee nurse associate, nurses, doctors, the sister and the matron.
Staff introduced themselves to me and used my preferred name which makes a huge difference to how I respond to someone. There was one issue with an NHS processionals support worker making an inappropriate comment about my face, but all other staff were polite and courteous and showed insight and understanding into my issues that made my treatment more complex. The surgical team also were very understanding, appropriately humoured and made sure I knew who each of them were.
I can’t thank the ward more for supporting me through what was a really traumatic couple of days for me.
The view is alright too!
