"I feel warm and fuzzy"

About: Inverurie Hospital / Midwifery

(as a service user),

I wanted to share my birth story and experience of Inverurie CMU with you all as it is definitely a positive one 🙂 I want everyone to feel as warm and fuzzy as I do right now ! 😂

I was due my second baby (a little boy to go with our 19 month old tornado of a girl!) and had my heart set on a water birth at Inverurie.

My first birth story included a lot of panic and fear (normal for the first time I imagine) and an induction which led to a very fast, panicky birth. So this time around I joked that my birth plan was simply a water birth at Inverurie with a harpist playing in the corner and a continental meats and cheese board to be served to me afterwards ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ not that much to ask right ?!

My due date came and went and no sign of baby boy. AMH was full so I was told I was on the waiting list for an induction and would be contacted on the 12 days after my due date to be booked in. As the date got closer I did shed a few tears that I wasn’t going to have the experience I envisioned in my head , but after realising the end result is the same (a beautiful baby) I went to bed on the the night before ready for the induction call.... and got woken up with contractions around midnight (WOO HOO 🎉)

When the contractions were 5 minutes apart we headed to Inverurie (approx 10am) and all the ladies were lovely! My contractions went a bit crazy and started jumping from 5 mins apart to 10 mins. I was examined and turned out I was only 2-3cm dilated. We were offered to go into the day room and wait around to see if my examination had inspired baby boy, but it did not! The midwives were all so lovely and I could tell I should have just went home but they didn’t want me to feel disheartened or frustrated . Fiona & Jude were the two who examined me and there were another couple who kept popping in to check on me, offer drinks, birthing balls etc . They were all so positive that they would see me “later” that I headed home around 2pm still really excited.

My contractions remained random until about 10pm when , although they were still jumping from 10min , 5min , 2min back to 10min apart , they got very very intense! We called Inverurie and were told to head in. When we walked in I was really struggling with the pain so was delighted to have midwife Laura take me to the birthing room which was lit by candles with the bath already full! She confirmed I was 4.5cm and I headed into the bath.

WOW. Even if you don’t want a water birth, get yourself in a bath for contractions ! The relief was amazing and I instantly stopped shaking and was able to have nice chit chat (about our dogs , our kids and all the blue cheese I was going to eat afterwards 😂) between contractions. The gas and air helped also haha!

I stepped into the pool at 11.05pm and baby boy was born - still in the pool- at 1.07am!! 2 hours later!

My midwife Laura was amazing! She was so calm and apart from checking the heart beat there was no other intervention, instructions or pressure. It made it so peaceful just having her there telling me that my body will tell me what to do so just relax etc.

I was making mental notes of all the midwives names but unfortunately most of them have escaped me! But everyone there was lovely from start to finish. If any of you are reading this , thank you so much ❤️ Panic and fear definitely followed me home the first time , but not this time.

If you have the option to give birth at Inverurie CMU I highly recommend it!

Dear vegaqf37

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback of your recent birth experience. I’m so pleased you were supported by the team at Inverurie CMU and your midwife Laura. I will ensure your feedback is shared with Laura and the team.

It is always lovely to receive positive feedback and I am so pleased you were able to have your water birth. We will need to progress with a continental meat and cheese board afterwards instead of the traditional tea and toast!

Wishing you so much happiness with your family

best wishes Rachael
