"Totally unacceptable treatment"

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

What is a very worrying time for me was made infinitely worse by the treatment I received at the hands of the staff in the MRI department in Darlington Hospital. It is wrong that people are treated differently and offensively because of their size, and yet it seems to be happening more and more in hospitals. I was told the MRI takes people up to 32stone in weight. I am not 32 stone or over, but have a large abdomen due to health issues, and medications. When I received my appt I rang and spoke to someone who told me that I would be fine. When I actually got into the scan department, I heard the radiographers talking about my size through the soundproof curtains. I was cannulated, and awaited my scan. The assistant was then heard talking about me as "she" and discussing my size. The radiographers did try to put me in the scanner but the large camera on my chest made it uncomfortable for me and I was told it would damage the machine. I have never felt so frustrated and angry in my life. It is not the job of staff to make judgements on patients, whether it be their age, their gender, their religion or ethnicity. Their size should also be something they are not judged on. Shameful behaviour and totally unprofessional

Not even an option on departments to complain about this, that speaks volumes
