"Letter summary to myself from doctor"

About: Borders Community Services / East/West Community Mental Health Team

(as the patient),

In the summery letter I received, I was horrified that I had been described as well behaved and had dressed appropriately  during our appointment.

This language used made me feel demeaned and condescended to, and almost treated as a child.

Thank you for being in touch and letting us know your feelings on reading the letter. It is routine for psychiatrists to make comment on appearance and behaviour as part of the interview summary sent to GPs and the doctor involved tends to copy those letters to patients as this is good practice in his experience. We understand you have fed back directly to the consultant the effect his wording in the letter had on you and as a result he intends to make some changes that will better convey his meaning and hopefully will not cause offence in the future. Thank you again for feeding back on your experience.
