Attended the clinic today for an hysteroscopy appointment.   The doctor was very informative regarding the procedure, before, during and after. Both nurses in attendance were supportive, caring and understanding of how tense and uncomfortable the procedure was for me.   The aftercare by them was excellent and gave me confidence. However, I do wonder if the procedure could be made more bearable and easier for all (patient, doctor and nurses) if an anaesthetic was administered beforehand.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your valuable feedback. It means so much to the team to hear that you felt so well supported, cared for and that the staff were so understanding.

We continually strive to provide high quality patient centred care, so it is really lovely to receive such positive comments to assure us that we are getting it right for our patients.

I am really sorry to hear that you found the procedure so uncomfortable. The aim of attending the outpatients department for some procedures can avoid the need for general anaesthetic which reduces the need for an inpatient stay and the associated side effects, which many patients prefer. In some circumstances a local anaesthetic can be used but this would usually be discussed with you by the nurse or doctor performing your procedure if it is possible, but is not always recommended dependent on the area being examined and how effective this could be. It is usually recommended that patients take painkillers prior to attending the clinic to minimise the discomfort they experience as local anaesthetic is only usually used if the cervix is completely closed as this is the area that can be numbed, but is not possible for numbing of the uterus. Associated side effects can be experienced with little benefit to the patient in these circumstances,so it is only offered on an individual basis based when it is thought it will be effective based on the examination findings. Ladies are encouraged to tell staff if they feel too much discomfort and can stop the procedure at any time, and then if the procedure is still required, can choose to return as a daycase to have this completed under a general anaesthetic.
