"My rehabilitation from alcohol misuse"

About: Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / Basingstoke

(as a service user),

I am a 53 year old female.  I attended Jacob House, Basingstoke.  I had been misusing alcohol for 25 years on and off (mostly on).

By the time I started attending Jacob House I had been drinking around 3 bottles wine a day. I desperately wanted to stop or I knew I would die. I was having  physical and psychological problems affecting everyday life.

My GP centre put me in touch with Jacob House

I didn't really know what to expect but knew that I would take all that was offered to me.  I was met by cheerful, welcoming and extremely down-to-earth staff.

Dr. Turner and the nursing staff were very compassionate and I trusted their professionalism.  The councellors provided me with realistic goals and a strong structural programme to achieve alcohol reduction.  Their compassion was amazing.  There are many volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge.  The time they gave  to all of us was just outstanding.

I attended JH for about a year and half, had several relapses but slowly reduced my alcohol intake enough to have home detox.  The staff were amazing, never judgemental, always supportive.  I loved this feeling of support and team work with  other attendees also.

I have been abstinent from alcohol for a year and 5 months.  I can honestly say that without JH, I would not be where I am today - the healthiest I have been for many years. I am a very keen cyclist and keep active.I have changed my stressful worklife to a job I now enjoy. I am interested in so many things in general

Hi Stayhealthy, it's really great to hear how you took the steps to get support so thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience.

It's good to know you found the Basingstoke Inclusion team (based at Jacobs House) welcoming and cheery and I will be sure to pass on this feedback to the team. We know its important to be put at ease as soon as possible when you take those first steps, and your experience reinforces the difference it can make.

Our team is made up of people with so many different life experiences and knowledge which includes volunteers, and those with lived experience. To know that together, they have met your needs helps us to continue to shape the service moving forward.

Well done for making those positive changes, and congratulations for living a life that you now enjoy! We wish you all the best for your future

Thank you & good luck

Grace
