"92 year old left for 12 1/2 hours in a..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Accident and emergency

Saturday night a doctor called for an ambulance for my 92 year old friend. I was told it will take up to 2 hours as it wasn’t an emergency but that was ok she was in bed and laying down. The problem was when she tried to get up she was dizzy and very unbalanced. We waited 7 1/2 hours for the ambulance I should have known then it was going to be a bad night/day.

From the ambulance she was placed in a wheelchair and taken to a&e where she was assessed by some lovely nurses and doctors. At 12.30 Sunday afternoon we was told she had to stay in hospital for further tests and we was placed again back in the A&e to wait for a ward bed. My friend had been in the wheelchair now for 4 hours and feeling very uncomfortable she couldn’t stand and stretch her legs and she was in pain from cramp and a sore bottom I asked many times if there was a trolley bed for her to lay down on.,now remember we hadn’t been to sleep at all Saturday night and tiredness and sore bones were taking there tole on her (and me). Nurses continued to come and do blood pressure but every time I asked for her to be placed in a bed I was told sorry theres not a bed available.

I went and looked in the bays where beds were and was upset and angry to see empty beds. I was told they are for the most serious case. Age 92 been up all night feeling dizzy and been sitting in a wheelchair for hours was not seriously enough to get a bed. My friend was left in that wheelchair for 121/2 hours before a bed was available. Darren a lovely nurse that had just come on night shift managed to find her a pillow to put under her bottom (probably from an empty bed)

I left my friend tired tearful sore and scared on the ward. No care other than basic was given to her. I don’t blame the frontline staff it’s the people at the top making their jobs hard.

To say I’m angry is a understatement. logo
