"Leading up to Cancer Treatment"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Clinical Haematology (Ward 16) University Hospital Monklands / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I noticed two bumps on my head and under my chin, so went to my doctor. The doctor brought in the Head Nurse, who consulted a book, but could not decide which I had, so put me forward to Dermatology, a 4 month possible wait, as it was not deemed urgent.

2months later, Monklands Hospital phoned me, they had a cancellation, would I be interested, I took it quickly, the two bumps on my head had become a dozen, all dark red.

Dermatology reacted fast, taking a biopsy, then a week later a CD scan, Dr Schiffralli had an idea what it was.

I was invited to attend an hour session, where junior doctors are being taught, for them to view and ask about my symptoms, a bit of fun.

I received a phone call, two days after the CT scan, explains that Dermatology is passing me over to Haematology, who specialise in Lymphoma.

The problem was found early, giving me a fighting chance to survive this.

The moral of this starting story, is to use your doctor, if you find a lump, I could have easily decided not to pester my busy doctor, then not noticed the problem until it was too late.

Dear commando59

Thank-you for taking the time to provide a really meaningful overview of your recent experience of the NHS. As you say, it's important if anyone has any concerns to see their GP as soon as possible so that any onward referrals can be made to hospital services. As Service Manager for Dermatology I'm really pleased that you were seen relatively quickly and had a positive experience of our service. Teaching our future doctors and nurses is a key part of what our teams do and I'm delighted that you could support them and all had some fun in doing so.

Wishing you well for any onward treatment and once again, thanks.

Regards

Fraser
