I read with interest the NHS leaflet 'Patients/Visitors help us win our battle against infection' which is freely available in the hospital though there is no indication as to when this was published.
I have observed patients and visitors complying with this advice. I also regularly observe all grades of NHS staff who do not wash their hands on entering and leaving the hospital and wards.
There are notices on the wards asking visitors not to sit on a patient's bed to limit cross-infection. On a daily basis staff arrive and leave their hospital duties in their uniforms which I assume is not acceptable?
Clearly these examples demonstrate conflict in compliance and will never lead to prevention of cross-infection.
