I provide volunteer hospital transport, through Age Concern, for people needing to get to hospital. I really like doing it. I get something from it and so do they – after losing my wife, it keeps me busy.
I always hear good things about Mount Gould, the people I drive for seem happy with the care. From my perspective, it’s the easiest place to bring people – it’s a nice building – and a lovely place, as these things go! If only more people’s appointments were there!
I really don’t like it when I have to take people to Derriford. A new firm has taken over parking there, and now I’m only allowed to stop for 5 minutes – when I used to be allowed 20. It makes life much more difficult. Every time I have to argue and battle with the attendants to allow me to have the time I need. All while I’m trying to pick up or collect vulnerable people.
Of course, as a volunteer I haven’t the money to pay for parking, so we really need to freedom to meet the ill and older people that we drive for. We help free up the ambulance service, but the attendants are so disrespectful to us when we’re doing a good and important job.
