"The gift of hearing has made a huge huge difference to my life"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Cardiology Outpatients Centre / Audiology

(as the patient),

I reached 65 this year ! Nothing remarkable about that really lots of people do. But in my case I’m really pretty pleased because after a pretty healthy life all my issues are coming at once.i developed AF and got great treatment at Larbert Cardiology best in Britain I think. Then my kidney decided to throw a stone in the works !! Not nice but treated at GP and Larbert A and E totally happy with both. Then after pressure from my wife and realising I had trouble hearing properly what my specialists were saying I sorted out a visit to have my hearing checked. GP set up a visit to Audiologist at SCH and after a hearing test worthy of NASA my feedback was that the gradual loss of high frequency would benefit from some help from a hearing aid. I had been making excuses for not hearing properly for a while including blaming others, always saying excuse me ! and filling in for words I didn’t hear. I started using sub titles on TV saying poor recording on dramas and flat screen TV speakers were rubbish.

This week the same young lady who tested my hearing a couple of m months ago gave me me back a huge chunk of my life that I had lost ! After an hour fitting and testing and adjusting two tiny devices that are almost totally invisible my life has been transformed. I live in the countryside and the day after I got them I heard my full dawn chorus in years at 0430 I stood in my garden and almost cried it was so amazing and I thought all the birds had just gone away. I can hear bees and people and the wind and rain on the windows and gravel crunching and F1 cars that have real engine noises again. I can hear my cat purring and water dripping in the sink I almost think I can hear plants growing !!!! The gift of hearing properly has made a huge huge difference to my life and I wanted to thank the Team at Stirling for doing that for me.we knock the NHS too often we should heap praise on them and pay them more than footballers and bankers and do all we can to thank them for the difference they make. I can’t name my helper because when I met her I didn’t pick up her name but I’m sure you know who you are I’m the big guy who thought your test rig looked like Darth Vader!!

Thank you for enabling me to hear my wife across a room telling me the grass needs cut best thing I have heard in years. You are all totally amazing 😉 thank you so much.

Dear Gratefulforforthvalley

Thank you for posting your story, it truly is a very emotional journey you have been on and reading your comments really made me think how life changing some experiences can be. It makes me very proud to be part of the team in FVRH.

Day after day staff come in and do their jobs hoping that, at the end of the day, their contribution has made a difference. This shows how much of a difference the teams all make and I will be sure to share with the teams that I manage.

best wishes

Alison
