"Hysteroscopy to investigate postmenopausal bleeding"

About: Kingston Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was referred for a Hysteroscopy to investigate postmenopausal bleeding and was told it would be like having a smear and I would feel mild discomfort including cramps.     The advice from the doctor was to take Ibuprofen/paracetamol  30 minutes before the procedure.   The hysteroscopy was very painful and I began to cry,   the doctor did acknowledge my distress but said 'You're doing well, we're nearly there I just need to get a sample'    This also hurt. At no time was I asked if I wanted to stop, I was in shock and ended up apologising for crying.   I felt totally unprepared for the pain and brutality of the whole procedure.   Afterwards, you get dressed and then you're sent on your way.   I felt disorientated on leaving the hospital and felt a fool for making a fuss and worried that I was abnormal for how I felt.   The information given beforehand is that 90% of women only feel mild pain, so did that mean I was being a baby? I was upset for days afterwards and don't ever want any gynaecological examinations again
